My precious teacher Marjorie "Marj" Barstow (1899~1996) often declared that first you think, then you move, and finally you feel. Here's a selection of comments she made to students while teaching in Australia in 1986~89*:

I’m in the midst of an “arm revolution,” which is why I decided to share my thoughts. Some of it may turn out to be nonsense, but as Shunryu Suzuki put it:

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few.”

With that caveat in place, join me in having a beginner’s mind about human arms…

I previously outlined the unique position of human arms in the 500 million years of chordata movement evolution – our earth has not witnessed anything like these two arms before. I mean, wow!

You do a workshop or performance or whatever – 12 people give you feedback. Eleven people praise you, but ONE PERSON says your work was dismal, ill-informed and boring. 

Which feedback do you think about most?
