8 Session Teaching Plan

Lesson One - Your Inner Teaching Plan

(Compass - Overview)

Group teaching using Alexander's discovery relies on principles, not plans. It is formless until your students give you your form, within each group you lead. There is nothing tangible to grasp: instead, let the form arise organically from your principled interaction with students.

In this first video, Jeremy will introduce you to the Change Compass. Instead of using "teaching procedures" to fill your course, use the Compass to orientate your understanding of the underlying process.

This session will also go through the course requirements. There is a schedule for delivery of coursework into the Facebook group. Please don't expect to match the level of participation of other previous members. We all learn differently. AND an important principle in teaching is to respect your own evolution: both your "place" and your "pace". Be kind to you. Do your best. That's all you need to succeed in this course.

MORE ON THE CHANGE COMPASS

The Change Compass is a teaching tool that is explained in depth in Jeremy's ThinkingBody Online course, by comparing it to FM's story. In this Group Teaching course, Jeremy will be using 5~10 minutes at the start of each video, to introduce you to elements of the Compass. The Compass expresses succinctly your process of learning/teaching. As such, it is a critical tool for understanding your role as a teacher in a group learning environment. In this course, Jeremy will use it to show you how to work with the group in processing change. The first video will involve a detailed introduction...

Lesson Two - 3 Powers That Drive Your Group

(Compass - 3 Energies)

Your Passion, Your Mentors, and A Higher Self.

Aligning the energy and purpose of the group is more than 80% of the secret to a successful result. Harmony of teacher and participants creates an "emergent" quality, that is more than the sum of individual ingredients.

Questions explored in this session:

  • how do you structure a group before it meets?
  • What is important about the place you meet in?
  • How can you prepare people so they come with the idea that you want them to have?

Part of your coursework is about preparing and teaching at least one offline, and one online class, this session will help you organize how you can bring that about. It is assumed that participants are already involved with teaching, so the course can be used to apply to what they are already doing. If you have no courses, you could gather a few people together and try it out!

Lesson Three - 3 Principles That Shape Your Content

(Compass - Step 8 --> 1)

First, let the students decide what they want to explore.

Getting this to happen is an art from your side - students have not usually encountered this kind of education in the past. You have the job to educate them to understand their responsibility. Jeremy will present many ways you can achieve this.

Second, transform the abstract into the practical.

Be allergic to generalizations: whenever students try to talk about their problem in general, keep asking about when, where, what, how, who and why, You are not a therapist or counsellor - your job is to transform their question into a specific activity, and analyze their movement behaviour while they do it.

Third, teach all your group through individuals.

Group teaching is still about teaching individuals - you do that "altogether, one after the other". There are several ways to practice this: Jeremy presents some artful practices that will help you develop a balance between the individual and the whole group.

Lesson Four - Structuring 7 Group Content Types

(Compass - Step 1 --> 2)

Alexander's discovery is the core of what you teach, NOT the Alexander Technique. AT is a form or process, not a discovery. Depending on your proclivities and wishes - you structure your class differentently.

We will study some typical models:

  1. The activity focused model - all participants interested in the same thing e.g. music playing
  2. Mandated attendance - participants are there because they have to be e.g. high school
  3. Corporate/biz style - exploring the concept of "infotainment" groups for stressed staffs
  4. Speaking Event - where many people are gathered to listen e.g. keynote at a conference
  5. Master Class - selected participants working while a larger group observes
  6. Sequence Planning - designing a series of groups designed to link together
  7. OTHERS - any group that does not fit in the above categories

Lesson Five - Online Teaching Secrets

(Compass - Step 1 --> 4 --> 2)

Once upon a time, a large number of AT teachers questioned the efficacy of teaching Alexander's discovery in Groups. Today, that is generally accepted as a legitimate methodology. However, now Online learning is the new Group Teaching.

Can Alexander's discovery be taught effectively on ZOOM?

Yes.

In this session, we look at how you teach when you cannot touch. Jeremy gives a demonstration lesson and then breaks down his process of doing it. Participants have been invited in past courses to bring in a recording of an online lesson you have given, and analyze it during this session. These may be in the recorded archives.

Lesson Six - Teaching Games & Activities

(Compass - Step 4 --> 5 through 2 & 8)

A game for the sake of a game is, of itself, next to useless. Participants might laugh and have fun, then leave your session feeling empty. In this class Jeremy dissects the classic features of a successful game:

  • Having a before/after structure
  • The clear idea being explored within the game
  • Sense deprivation, mysteries, and other useful game creation tools
  • Classic examples of some games that can be remastered for different situations

What is the difference between games and activities?

Not much, one is fun, the other informative. More of emphasis than anything else. However, there is a classic "Alexander's discovery" activity that can be adapted in infinite ways - you will be able to watch a video showing you how to use that.

This video is about when to use games (and activities), how to use games, why you use games and what games you can use.

Lesson Seven - Markeaching Your Group

(Compass - Steps 5 --> 7)

As above, so below.

Markeaching is my concept to express the idea that you start teaching your group through marketing that attracts people to come. Teaching + Marketing = Markeaching.

Communicating with your potential students is an effective way to develop your service. By articulating your vision, you are also required to articulate the content of what you are delivering, and why. People learn about you, like what you say and trust you enough to pay and come.

In this session, we review the results of your own experiments in organizing and delivering the group session that was requested for this course.

Lesson Eight - Next Steps in Your Learning…

(Compass - Step 7 --> 8)

This is not the end of the course, but the start of Phase two. You can continue in the ATS MasterMinders group on a monthly subscription if it is still current. This will give you access to many more courses.

To ask more about this, you can also send an email to Jeremy.

More details will be posted soon.

CAVEAT

You decide your own level of participation. If you want your money's worth, I will keep you busy. If you need limited stimulation, take what you need, leave the rest. How I structure and lead this group is itself an example of the principles I will be teaching. Participants have the responsibility to make this course work in the way most appropriate for them!
