I've been reading Daniel Kahneman – a psychologist who won the Nobel prize for his insights - and I came across his observation about how our brain works in times like this:

"The Altar tale illustrates a basic limitation in the ability of our mind to deal with small risks: we either ignore them altogether or give them far too much weight - nothing in between."
