Many of you have embraced Facebook advertising, seeking out your avatars and actually having fun finding people who love to be your students, before they even know it. Amazing!

To-day's blog is a basic primer, mixing together different concepts I've already covered, but putting them all together in a simple road map to manage your learning curve to greater understanding, skill and joy.

I am creating quite a ruckus in Japan these days - I announced that we will now call what we do BodyChance Method, not Alexander Technique.

What?!!

Students are exclaiming: we came to learn Alexander Technique!

Yes, well - of course. I do get that.

But how do you define Alexander Technique?

There are two ways to define Alexander Technique:

1.Alexander Technique is what Alexander discovered.
2.Alexander Technique is a way of teaching what Alexander discovered.

My feeling within ATSuccess this week is that we can do away with Alexander Technique thank you very much, but NOT the work. The old man said it had to evolve, but into what? There's the rub - when it stops looking like what he did, the traditionalists worry. It's right that they worry, but not helpful to them, helpful to me. Why? I know I am doing something different when the feeling all around is "No - that is wrong." Hang on - isn't that exactly a indicator of change? (But not a good one I hear them yelling!)

It was August 1988, the year of the Brighton Congress and the first time Marj had stepped on to the shores of England since (she said): "…the Germans came and went."

I'd been an Alexander Technique teacher for 8 years, now suffering a humiliating and debilitating injury: I could hardly pick up a cup of tea in my left hand. Three months earlier my father had died; and just before arriving at the Congress, I had dislocated my left shoulder while rock climbing in Sweden.

Last night in Tokyo, one of the participants of CareerThinking - my Japanese version of ATSuccess - wondered how to handle people who claimed she was too "pushy" on her Facebook page and in her flyers.

Guess what?

You are not "pushy." They are. About you.

A person who doesn't want what you are offering will feel you are "pushing them" every time you offer it. They resist. They push back. Of course - how could it be any other way? I will push back against anything I don't want.

This is a bit like my 30 Day Challenge exercise last year, but this time around with a clearer focus on building on specific event. Once you have decided who will be reading about your workshop, life gets so much easier.

Instead of walking around in the fog, wondering where your next student will come from, and what you will say to them - now you have a clarity about what kind of person is coming, you can figure exactly how to talk to them.

Now you need to start thinking "Where is their pain?"

You need to be asking the question "What do they really want?"

Beyond the logical answers that most people give. In Yoga, why do people really study Yoga? If you do, why is that?

Alexander Technique teachers know that trying to work exclusively with a person's troublesome arm is not ultimately effective - it's essential to also know how that arm fits in with a person's entire coordination. Those teachers and trainees in my coaching group know that same thing applies to Facebook: it is part of a holistic strategy. Facebook is your arm - but what is the whole body of your business strategy?
