When I finally met her, she was younger than I imagined.

"It's like I am reading my own mind."

She had been receiving my emails explaining my personal coaching service at BodyChance. It was the time my marriage was ending, and my emails at that time were deeply personal affairs that explored self-worth, depression, actualizing your desired experiences. I was publically exposing how to soft-wire a positive, can-do outlook on life, when all I wanted to do at the time was take my own life away.

This is a bit like my 30 Day Challenge exercise last year, but this time around with a clearer focus on building on specific event. In our recent CareerThinking session in Tokyo, YogaのMichiko had an interesting epiphany.

She was complaining about a certain type of Yoga partitioner who really got up her goat (irritated her) and was posing the question: how can I manage those types?

You don't.

Don't take clients you don't want; don't take clients that don't match your service and needs. Of course this is not possible without a clear niche approach to your business.

I resist new things, most of us do.

Particularly "technology" things (it takes too much time) and "number" things (I don't know how to analyse) but I recognise that our work is about going from the known to the unknown. When building a successful Alexander Technique practise, you have to practise what you preach.

The "unknown" is where progress happens.

Why bother looking back when all you want to do is go forward? The past is the past, right? Wrong. The past is right here being you right now. Everything that happened is you right now. I think that all that matters now is what you do next, but you need to know what is and isn’t working for you…

What Happened To Me In 2013

Back in 1980, one of my key methods to attract students to our Sydney studio was to stand on the stage in Hyde Park, and declare myself the ringmaster of a $100 competition. This was the most bizarre competition that anyone had heard or seen before, and I used to attract a large crowd of bemused onlookers, curious to discover the "trick" of my simple challenge.

To win, you just had to stand up from a chair without pulling your head back.

Coming to the end of the year, and I am planning the special series of blogs for January. I will be exploring with teachers and students in my group how to use Facebook to connect to the students you love working with. Are you a teacher focused on building your practise? Then I have managed to gather together an eclectic group of teachers who are united by their passion to make this career work, and help each other doing it. There is no other Alexander Technique group of teachers and students like this in the world.
