SCENE ONE

You're running late, six bags of shopping, a screaming kid - the sweat dripping off your face (which you can't wipe) as you hurry down street hoping to catch the 11.07 bus and not be stranded for another hour.

At that moment a magic man steps in front of you and says:

"Would you like a free lift home?"

What are you going to say?

You want to say yes, but it feels too fantastic, too generous. Why ever would some offer me that? They must want something else…

"Why would you do that?"

It was August 1988, the year of the Brighton Congress and the first time Marj had stepped on to the shores of England since (she said): "…the Germans came and went."

I'd been an Alexander Technique teacher for 8 years, now suffering a humiliating and debilitating injury: I could hardly pick up a cup of tea in my left hand. Three months earlier my father had died; and just before arriving at the Congress, I had dislocated my left shoulder while rock climbing in Sweden.

Have you ever been there?

Looking at the those beautiful shoes, that cool hat, or staring at you in the mirror wearing that luxurious overcoat with exactly the collar you wanted - but, oh! It's so expensive. Remember how you were both excited and anxious at the same time: Is this the right decision? What will my best friend say? Isn't it too much money?

It is at this point you need reassurance.

Your key job to manage your Alexander practice is effectively engineering your state. Such a boy's way of saying it! I'll put it another way - to make your business work, you need to be feeling OK with your Self, to be happy all the time.

Who achieves that?

Not me, that's for sure. It's a daily work. I was powerfully reminded this morning of how important this is.
