How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything
by Jeremy ChanceOne of my mentors, Brendan Nicholls, was incredibly circuitous in the way he assessed a new business partner. He was driven by a fractal idea that goes like this:
“How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything”
FM said it in a different way:
“If you apply the principle to the carrying out of one evolution, you have learned the lot.”
What does this mean?
It’s exactly what you will experience in a group lesson à la BodyChance. You explore an ordinary, everyday activity – like working at the computer or chopping a carrot in the kitchen, and suddenly you are meeting your true self.
An unexpected discovery, almost shocking.
Because how you chop carrots is going to be the same way you do everything.
What did Brendon do when he wanted to assess a new business partner? Here’s a plan for deciding if you want to work with someone on a new project…
First you casually suggest:
“Why don’t we meet for a coffee and talk it through together?”
Simple enough.
Then you name an obscure café you are sure the person does not know. Hard to find. Give them the correct name, that’s all. Ask them to contact you if they are having trouble finding it. What do they do at this point?
Make a mental note. Fractal remember. Do they listen well?
Then suggest a weird time, say: “Let’s meet at 10.50am – is that OK?”
Does your person agree? Be clear about the time, say it two or three times: “10.50am OK?” Make sure you get their clear acknowledgement and agreement. Then just be there early, waiting. Brendan’s idea is simple…
If that person is late, even by a few seconds…
Never do any business with that person. Not ever.
Harsh you think? Maybe. But Brendon was being fractal.
Fractal says: the way they do anything is how they do everything.
Alexander says: If you apply the principle to the carrying out of one evolution, you have learned the lot. (About them)
When a person can not keep their 1st appointment, how do you think they will behave later on? Are they more or less likely to miss your next deadline?
Fractal says: Yes. They are likely to behave in the same way.
When your stakes get higher, your partner being late can damage your project. For Brendon, it simply wasn’t worth the risk. They failed their audition (and they didn't even know they were auditioning).
People are fractal. You are fractal. I am too.
How we do the little things is how we do the big things.
To understand why your life is not working out the way you want it, watch your little behaviours. Pay attention to the minutiae of your life. All your answers are there. They always have been there – you just needed someone else mirror them back to you.
Brendon was the mirror, although he did not tell them that.
At ATSuccess, we reflect you. You see how you are doing the little things in your practise by noticing how differently others are behaving about the same thing. You discover why those little things add up to getting too few new students. This leads to a crisis, worry as your confidence wanes. Lack of confidence is partly a function of lack of knowledge, and depression can be avoided by just discovering more about what you are doing.
ATSuccess aims to solve the mystery of why it is so hard to convince others of the efficacy of Alexander's discovery. And it is hard. There are others who struggle with you!
It feels good to know you are not alone.
Eventually, being in a community like this leads you to deep insights. The small things lead you to understand the big things.
Stop trying to solve the big problems. It’s hopeless.
Start with the small things. Do you have a simple CTA? Are you clear about your USP? These two tweaks alone can make a huge difference. I invite you to take part in my free seminar of 12 steps where I explain many of those little things. I ask you a lot of questions: about how you think? how you act? and what are you going to do about it?
What have you got to lose?
This is a gamble you can’t lose, because all you will end up with is what you already had.
