I hate sitting near a loud talker in a café when I am alone, don’t you?

I get distracted by listening to any stranger going “blah, blah, blah” about “whatever”.

This week, I came across just that kind of person in the Poinciana Café in Mullumbimby, and then an amazing thing happened…

BlahBlah was covered in tattoos, sitting at the next table and surrounded by a cluster of meek listeners, all nodding their heads silently (looking slightly bored)…

BlahBlah was going on about the terrible state of Australia at the moment. Oh please, spare me!

As I settled into my chair, I pulled out a marvellous book I was half way through… Then I heard BlahBlah, much to my annoyance. As usual, it set up a little war in me– I want to read, but I end up listening…

“…those bludgers don’t know a dam thing, they should be thrown off the dole and…”

Stop listening!!!

And I listen more.

Something magical happened.

Really, REALLY different.

Yet it wasn’t until I left the café that I knew it had even happened…

I didn’t listen to BlahBlah. Not once after that.

I read my book, and it’s like he wasn’t talking. But he was. All the time. And yet, after his first sentence, I realized I had no recollection of him, instead I had paid attention to my book.

Wow!

This. Is. New.

Why?!

We all know FM of course. Merzenich is a neuroscientist who helped to start BrainHQ.

However, once your education years are done and your career is on the way, for many people that’s it. Their intense learning years are over. They start coasting, and getting dumber by the day.
